Understanding Fascia: The root of Chronic Pain
To explain chronic pain through the lens of the fascial system, we have to look past the muscles and into the "biological fabric" that holds the human form together.
The science behind Fascia
The science behind fascia begins with the understanding that the body is not just a collection of 600+ independent muscles, but a single, continuous fascial web.
The Biological Fabric
Fascia is a specialised connective tissue composed primarily of collagen fibres, elastin, and a fluid-like ground substance. It acts as the body's structural "glue" wrapping around every muscle fibre, nerve, and organ.
The Fluid State ( Thixotropy)
Fascia can change from fluid "oil" state to a thick "gel" state. Stress, injury, or trauma causes this fluid to thicken, creating sticky adhesions that lock muscles in place.
The Sensory Organ
Fascia is six times more innervated than muscle. It communicates directly to your nervous system, "bracing" in response to emotional or physical trauma.
The Pull Effect
Because the web is continuous, a restriction in one area creates a mechanical "tug" elsewhere. This is why the root of chronic pain is rarely where the pain is actually felt. By applying sustained pressure, we return the fascia to its fluid state, rebalancing the entire system.
